Norton : Commando R Rare 1969 Norton Commando Type-r Picture(s) and Description:
Rare 1969 Norton Commando Type R Vehicle Description (re listed because eBay decided they did not like the words "not Triumph" in the original title. so we'll try again.) I bought this bike as part of a package deal with a Triumph 650 I wanted, but this bike puts me over my agreed 6 bike limit, so my wife would like it to find a new home.

The frame/engine/transmission numbers match. I did some research and it appears that this bike is a Commando type R. This model was only produced between March and July 1969 using the gnarly Fastback 750 motor with the cone clutch cover and cam end tachometer drive and is very rare. This bike is not running but it kicks over nicely with very strong compression. The battery is very dead, but when I connected it, I got a good blue spark at the plugs. I borrowed a fuel tap from one of my Triumphs (the originals are shot) and added a gallon of gas. The carbs tickled up fine, nothing leaked, and a few good kicks produced a cough from the engine. At that moment my patient and understanding wife appeared to advise me that if I got it started Ill want to keep it. and she is right, so I stopped tinkering.
Although this bike has not run for many years, I suspect that it will start up with some love and adjustment.
The bike will need work before it is fit for the road, but it is in generally good condition much better than barn fresh and is very complete. Various bits and pieces need attention the tires and mufflers are shot for example, but the only items that I have noticed missing are the handle bar switches and the points cover (available from Domi Racer). The tail lamp is wrong but most everything else including the fenders look original with only one dent (pictured) that I noticed. The chrome is marked and faded but could polish up well enough for a rider. The paint is not original and not perfect but I gave the top of the tank a quick polish and it came up remarkably well. I think you could use it as a club night rider with not too much effort and not have to make excuses for its condition.

I have been an antique motorcycle hobbyist for over 30 years and occasionally sell off some of my surplus collection of parts. These parts are old and used and my idea of excellent condition is subjective, and your opinion of the same item may be average condition so please look at the photos and ask questions. Although I am considered by many to be very knowledgeable, this is not a business, and I am not a professional expert so please do your research on compatibility and fit etc. because I am unable to accept returns. Ive received a number of emails asking questions like, how much work does it need, and how much will it cost? I cant answer these questions because there are so many variables you will certainly need to go through the whole bike but how much needs doing will include your judgment on whether a part is just worn, or is worn out; and what you plan to do with the bike. Here are a couple of examples:
1) To restore the front wheel to ride/enjoy the bike Clean off all the surface rust with chrome polish, treat any remaining small marks with chrome paint, polish hub by hand, and clean out the brakes. This will cost maybe $5.
2) To restore the front wheel to show condition Re chrome rim, fit stainless spokes, machine polish hubs, replace shoes and hardware. This will cost maybe $250.
3) To restore font fork to ride/enjoy clean up rust on legs fit gaiters and ride the bike and see if the pitting is bad enough to the for seals to leak. If they leak, new stanchions are about $100 a pair.
4) To restore front fork to show condition Fit new legs and bushes and seals; machine polish sliders; re enamel triple clamps etc. This will cost maybe $250.
5) To restore the paintwork polish what you have (its pretty nice) $2, or professional repaint $400 You get the idea.
New tires and mufflers are a must, personally, I would choose to fit new fork stanchions rather than mess about for hours trying to save $100. If I was going to keep the bike I reckon I could probably make it look very respectable and make it ready for the road for less than $500 your mileage may vary.
