Those who know me and are familiar withmy shop, are aware that I own many, many Nortons.I restore them, ride them, enjoy them, love them. But they come and they go.
This one, however, is different. This is my oldest Commando, made in Jan 69.This is Nortons very first Commando Model, originally named the '20M3' in 1968
(after the Atlas engine configuration of number 20)
and renamed the 'Fastback' for 1969.This is the bike Great Britain voted Bike of the Year four years in a row.And this is the bike that made Norton the King of the British bikes.
Ive owned her for years, and vowed to never sell her. But the economy these last two years has been hard on my bike shop business. I find it necessary to sell some of my favorite rides to raise a little working capital. This 69 Fastback is one of those that must be sacrificed to the Great Recession Gods.
This summer, our shop performed a crank up overhaul
We geared it to the moon,so 100 mph is a walk in the park, and80mph is revving an easy 4,000 rpm.
The bike is truly beautiful and unique, starts easily, and runs strong.
Camshaft and lifters resurfaced and polished by Berry Cam.
New Black Diamond S.S. valves, Kibblewhite valve springs,
Braided stainless steel rocker oil feed line for extra reliability.New oversize drive sprocket results in taller gearing.
Boyer Bransden Electronic Ignition Hi output Dual lead coil No points or condensers Your timing in set forever Solid state Charging System Quartz Halogen Headlight Bulb
we improved the crankcase breather system, greatly preventing oil leaks,
The isolastics system (rubber engine mounting system) has been re shimmed. The gearbox has been overhauled with new bushings, oil seals and o rings.
We overhauled and upgraded the clutch with our exclusive"ZM EZ Pull Clutch actuating System", which provides atwo finger clutch pull with no loss of clutch strength.
Mikuni carb conversion coupled with a K& N high flow aircleanermakes for easier starting, smoother low rpm power and throttle response, and absolutely awesome over all horsepower.
Both tires were replaced, with a new Dunlop TT100 Roadmaster Front for originality, and a new Classic Maxxis Rear for a combination of good traction and long wear. The front brake has been upgraded with the same high lift brake camperformance modification that the 60s factory racers used. The kickstart lever has been updated to the Mk3 style, providing better clearance of the muffler.
Aftermarket rear shocks are in excellent condition.New internal front fork bushings installed.New chrome fork tubes installed,New fork seals installed.
All the lights work. The well hidden horn works. The front fender is a nice Mk3 unit. The original Lucas ammeter works well. The comfortable original seat is in excellent condition. The original instruments are in excellent condition and both work well.Years ago, the original fiberglass gas tank was sealed and painted yellow epoxy, along with the frame, swingarm, and trim. The epoxy paint is as tough as anything.
The engine is well broken in, having about 200 miles on it.
The engine oil has been changed, using Motorex Semi synthetic 15W50.
The gearbox oil has been changed using Bardahl 80W90 Semi synthetic Transmission Oil. The primary oil has been changed using Bardahl Primary Chaincase Oil.
The clutch pull is light, the clutch action is smooth and strong, and the gearbox shifts like silk. The engine always starts with one kick and runs like new. The power is strong and controllable with tons of mid range torque. The front brake works exceedingly well.
The side stand is functional there is no centerstand. For years, there has been a bubble in the gas tank paint near the gas cap. It hasnt changed in years, and I dont expect it to ever be a problem.
All and all, this is a wonderful and reliable motorcycle. Its maintenance is up to date, and it is currently ready to be ridden.Turn the key, kick it to life, and ride it across the country.
When not ridden, the bike was always stored in a climate controlled garage.By the way, the P at the end of the engine number means that the enginewas produced at the Matchless factory in Plumstead, London. The engine number, gearbox number and frame VIN tag all match. The title is clear of all liens.
