Kawasaki : KZ440 LTD 81 Kawasaki KZ440 LTD 440 not 400 1981 Picture(s) and Description:

This 1981 Kawasaki is a blast to ride. I'm selling it because I'm a young guy with too many toys and too many bills. It was my first bike and I taught myself to ride on it. I purposely chose this bike because I read a lot about them on sites like KZ400.com and Kawiforums.com and decided that it was a perfect balance of power, handling, and braking capabilities for me. I learned a lot about these bikes. Here are the key specs. Overall Length: 81.9"Overall Height: 46.5"Dry Weight: 375lbs4-Stroke SOHC 2-Cylinder, Air cooledDisplacement 443 CC Bore x Stroke 67.5 x 62mm, 9.2:1 Compression RatioElectric StarterKeihin CV36 carbsBattery and coil (Transistorized Ignition)40 HP at 8,500rpm26 ft/lbs at 7,000rpm 6-speed I have done quite a bit of work on this bike, personally and also professionally. I have most of my receipts saved somewhere. It was in sad shape when I originally brought it down from Pennsylvania. In the last 1000 miles: New front and rear tires (professionally) New front shocks (professionally) In the last 300 miles: (about 3 months) Carbs rebuilt (by local shop) New plugs and plug wires New stock airfilter New battery Stripped and painted gas-tank Adjusted clutch cable Adjusted drive chain A few oil changes (New filters) The only non-stock modification I made was a "coil-mod", where the ignition coil gets power directly from the battery. I did this by simply wiring up a relay, so none of the factory wiring has been molested. This is a popular mod among KZ400 owners, and I definitely saw a nice improvement in spark strength and engine smoothness. Read about it on KZ400.com. Cosmetically, this bike is not perfect. There are several small tears in the seat, the biggest one has a patch on it. There is some corrosion on the motor that comes off with steel-wool, but is a very tedious task. There is some rust on the exhaust. Other minor rust in other areas. The only thing that doesn't work is the horn. Everything else works. It starts up with full choke and has a slight hesitation until fully warm with choke off. Once warmed up it runs great and shifts through all 6 gears. The brakes are very strong. If I were to keep this bike here are the things I would do to it next: Adjust cam chain tension Adjust valves Flush brake fluid Stitch seat tears and a good detailing I have done my best to describe this bike to the best of my ability. I am not a motorcycle mechanic but I do have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge (I have restored several BMWs including complete engine rebuilds). If you have any questions about the bike please ask me before bidding! I require at least a $200, non-refundable down-payment from the winning bidder within 24 hours of the auction end, and full payment within 7 days of the auction end. I will deliver the bike up to around 500 miles from my location for 50 cents a mile, but the buyer must contact me about this first. Thanks for your interest, and happy riding!
