Indian : Indian Four 1940 Indian Four Motorcycle Picture and Description:
Here we have a 1940 Indian Four with 2038 miles, I have a Florida Title in my name, and have put all the miles on this bike myself. This was the 47th Indian Four built in 1940, thus making it the 47th Skirted Indian Four ever built. I have a Maryland title dated 5/12/1971 in the name of John Clymer Dunegan Jr. of Rockville Md. There is also a letter dated 8/15/1973 from John to Mike Peters, who was the go between for John, and Michael Hashem. There is also a Bill of sale from John to Michael Hashem dated 8/27/1973. Mike H worked on Cruise Ships, and would be gone for long periods of time, thus the reason, Mike Peters helped with the sale. Once Mike returned to dry land, he began the slow long process of restoring this 1940 Indian Four. Mike was a patient man, and he was also a perfectionist. Only the best original NOS parts were to go on this restoration, as it was to be done right, or not at all. Mike had completed the restoration, and the bike sat in his collection for years. fast forward to the present. Somewhere around 2003 Mike decided to sell the bike to William Beaulieu, of North Monmouth Me. Now William, better know as "Dollar Bill" is also a perfectionist, and wanted to make sure the restoration was done correctly. Bill decided to bring the 440 to one of the best, if not THE best Indian restoration shops in the country, HP Cycles. Once at HP Cycles, Dino was given the task of going through the bike. The Motor was removed from the frame, and Don Heath was given the task of giving the engine his personal touch. Don can build these engines in his sleep. I can tell you first hand that this bike is the BEST running Indian Four I have ever owned or have ridden. Make no mistakes about it, there are other bikes out there that will run as good as this bike, but there are none better then this one. Now more about the bike. I have put over 2k miles on this bike, and all the bugs have been sorted out. everything works as it should, and the engine does not skip a beat. The valves have been adjusted, as has the points, and timing. Oil has been changed, everything has been greased, and the chain was replaced at 500 miles. The chains have been the weak points on these bikes, and i wanted to make sure it was fresh. There is a M441 carb on the bike, with one of Cotton's Floats that i installed myself. The Generator, and Distributor was rebuilt by the best guy out there Indian Frank. There are two small scratches on the front fender, and a small chip on the left handlebar. other then that you would be hard pressed to find any other imperfections. I purchased this bike from Bill in August 2008, and have put many a happy mile on it. Now it is time for the next caretaker to enjoy it. I could go on, and on about the bike, but there would not be enough room in this auction to write it all.
